North Baltimore Center Merges with Mosaic Community Services

Article posted on:07/06/2010

On July 1, 2010, the North Baltimore Center became a part of Mosaic. The merger of these two comprehensive community-based mental health service providers will expand the geographic reach of Mosaic services into Baltimore City, and will promote an integrated service delivery system that includes Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Carroll County and a portion of Howard Country.

The merger of Mosaic and the North Baltimore Center resulted in a combined client base of approximately 20,000 children, adolescents and adults served annually. Both organizations will continue to offer the extensive array of services currently in place, including mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, supported housing and employment, medical day care, psychiatric day programs, and services for children and adolescents.

Jeff Richardson, Mosaic Executive Director, will lead the combined organization with a staff of over 700 employees and an annual budget of approximately $36 million.

"The North Baltimore Center has been an innovative provider in Baltimore City for over forty years," says Richardson. "We are looking forward to adding our own expertise to the strong foundation it has created, bringing with us multiple resources that will benefit both the clients and the organizational structure."

Dr. Steven Sharfstein, President and CEO of Sheppard Pratt Health System, Inc., the parent organization of both Mosaic Community Services and the North Baltimore Center, is highly supportive of the merger. "Each of our affiliates brings strengths to the table in terms of their services and approaches to care. When faced with the challenges of maintaining quality services in an era of declining funding and an increased demand for services, we must look for ways to most effectively manage our resources. The merger of the North Baltimore Center into Mosaic Community Services is both a programmatically and financially sound response."

Mosaic services are accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Programs (CARF). In 2008, it received a Standards of Excellence Award from the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations.
