With a grant from the Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Foundation, Mosaic will be able to increase the number of certified substance abuse counselors it has on staff. Maureen Burke, the Program Specialist at Mt. Airy/Weinberg, and Jennifer Troutman, a Service Coordinator at Mosaic’s Granite House PRP, recently received grant-funded scholarships to enable them to complete coursework needed for certification as substance abuse counselors.
It was funding from the Stulman Foundation that allowed Mosaic to launch its dual diagnosis program in 2007 for individuals with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health issues. Given the close connection between mental health and substance abuse issues, mental health providers need the ability to address both problems simultaneously. At present, Mosaic’s dual diagnosis program is staffed by a mental health therapist highly experienced in substance abuse counseling, along with a substance abuse counselor. The scholarships are Mosaic’s next step in increasing its substance abuse services.
